Useful hurdler Hazy Tom makes his chase debut at Towcester in the beginners' chase at 14:50 and is fancied to make a winning start to his career over the larger obstacles. Charlie Longsdon's six-year-old was unbeaten in bumpers in 2011 and made a decent impression when winning his first two hurdle starts later that year. He went on to finish third in Grade 2 company at Ascot and ended his season with a creditable fifth in a listed handicap hurdle during the Grand National meeting at Aintree. Hazy Tom looks a useful recruit to the chasing ranks this season and should take all the beating today.
Battlecry may be eleven but still races with plenty of enthusiasm and so gets the nod in the 15:10 handicap chase at Ludlow. The Nigel Twiston-Davies stable is in enviable form at present, with six winners since the turn of the month. Jockey Ryan Hatch is a good amateur claiming a useful 7 lb and gets on well with the gelding, having partnered him to success at Newbury last November following an excellent second at Cheltenham the previous month. Ludlow's sharp chase course will suit this front runner (placed here on three previous occasions), who has had a break and holds a reasonable record when fresh.
Our final SmartPlay is at Kempton Park this evening, where we think that Alraased can maintain his unbeaten all-weather record in the handicap at 19:30. John Dunlop's colt is clearly progressing and ran well in defeat last time when second on his handicap debut at Yarmouth behind the improving Shena's Dream. His only previous run on the polytrack resulted in a clear-cut maiden success. Alraased is a horse that may be ahead of the handicapper and is of much interest in a race like this.
