Timeform UK SmartPlays: Thursday October 4

Sir Michael Stoute's Debating Society is fancied at Warwick today
Four meetings in the UK today, with Timeform's SmartPlays coming from Bangor, Warwick and Wolverhampton.
Representatives from Donald McCain's yard are always to be respected at Bangor-On-Dee, the track situated closest to his Bankhouse stables, and having landed the juvenile event on today's card 12 months ago with the future Grade 1-winning Hollow Tree, he runs an interesting hurdling debutant in this year's renewal in the shape of Right To Rule (15:20). A half-brother to smart two mile hurdler and dual 2012 Royal Ascot winner Simenon, he was just a neck behind subsequent Old Borough Cup and Mallard Stakes winner Sir Graham Wade on his Flat debut before accounting for a couple of future winners at Newcastle on his final appearance for William Haggas. Sold to current connections for 40,000 guineas since, he makes plenty of appeal here.
The Betfair-sponsored 10 furlong Flat series reaches its conclusion at Warwick this afternoon, with 17 runners declared for the final at 16:40. Over a distance that is in fact nearer 11 furlongs than 10, Sir Michael Stoute attempts to complete a hat-trick with Debating Society, who arrives here in great form after successes at Lingfield (turf) and Epsom recently. As a close relation to listed winner Scottish Stage and other horses his trainer has had success with in the past, he may remain on an upward curve for a while yet and is likely to be competing at a higher level before long.
It would be wrong to claim that Jeremy Gask's horses are in form at present, with the last winner from the yard coming well over a month ago, but there have been one or two signs that this quiet spell may be coming to an end soon and this evening at Wolverhampton his Trending (19:10) looks to have plenty going for him. Impressive when winning at Bath over five furlongs in July and not seen to best effect on both subsequent starts over that C&D, he does need things to go his way, but has some form on polytrack and in a field where several like to race handily, his hold-up style may bring rewards and give the trainer/jockey combination a repeat success after Titus Gent took the honours in 2011.
