Will DVO rack up the most points this week?
Alan Dudman previews this week's SCD markets and believes Denis Van Outen is a decent wager to be Saturday's Highest Scorer...
It's the first themed night of Strictly 2012 this Saturday, and Hollywood awaits the remaining 13 contestants. One of my favourite films of all time is 'The Doberman Gang', a much underrated 1970s blockbuster, but I am unlikely to have any sort of rendition this weekend.
Olympic gymnast Louis Smith is still the favourite in the Winner market at 3.412/5, and he is good. However, last week's jive from Denise Van Outen (a successful tip for the column) proved that she is a grade one dancer - and she ought to be shorter than 4.3100/30.
The Essex ladette's 32 point routine was two ahead of Smith's ballroom. But Van Outen got every kick and flick correct, and spent more than half the dance in solo - which is always a good sign. I do like Smith, and he is coming out of his shell - but I do think he is the wrong favourite.
Van Outen is 2.9215/8 for Highest Score this Saturday, and she switches codes to the ballroom. I have mentioned before that her partner (James Jordan) is a fierce trainer, so much so that Van Outen suffered whiplash from training last week. Saturday's Foxtrot should present no such stiffness, as the routine needs to be clean and classy, with turns and transitions. Considering Victoria Pendleton collected 26 points for the same routine last Saturday, I expect 31 points or more for DVO.
Louis and Flavia will go for the Salsa, a dance that Sid Owen couldn't quite master last week (a losing tip for this column). The Salsa has got to be cheeky, quite sexy, and loads of hip movements. It's all about the chemistry, and the one gut feeling at the moment is that Louis isn't quite letting himself go. He is 3.211/5 for Highest Score on Saturday, and I might just swerve him. I like him in Ballroom, but we need to see if his Latin can get 30 plus before any involvement.
A bigger priced play for top score might be Kimberley Walsh at 5.04/1. She has the Quickstep which is always a routine I love. Like the cha cha cha and jive, it's a real crowd pleaser. The Girls Aloud singer was a tad disappointing last weekend with a 26 point Foxtrot. She was very stylish and elegant and had good lines, but something was missing, or perhaps we were just expecting more.
Now if Walsh van get the chemistry going with Pasha, this could be dynamite. Pash partnered pocket rocket Chelsee last year and they hit four 9s in the fourth week for their Quickstep. Pash produces some brilliant routines, and I think at the price she might be in with a shout of a 32 plus.
Lisa Reilly, who is more than just a novelty act, is back in a quick routine (the jive) and this should suit her once again. I don't like her ballroom, as them man has to lead. She trades at 6.05/1 for top marks, and Latin will always suit.
The Charleston is a great routine too, but unfortunately Fern Britton has that. Nikcy Byrne is dancing like an uncle at a wedding, and he will struggle with the Quickstep. Betfair Ambassador Michael Vaughan hopefully will get his footwork going more so than his 15 point jive, whilst big week two mover Pendleton (26 points on Saturday) will go for the tricky Rumba.
Award for campest dance of the decade went to Richard Arnold and his 19 point cha cha cha. If Liberace had come out (dancing) to a Shirley Bassey song, with Danny La Rue as the partner - it still wouldn't have beaten the TV critic on the camp stakes. And this is his problem, he is becoming like a novelty drag act.
He has the Quickstep and could be looking at the Bottom Two, for which he can be backed at 2.26/5.
However, the boring Texan Jerry Hall could be getting paltry marks this Saturday. Her 18 point Foxtrot last week was rubbish, but she survived the bottom two. Craig described her as having the posture of Mr Burns from The Simpsons, which has to be one of the greatest put downs yet. But the female can get away with a ballroom as the man can lead and direct.
Hall's next dance is the Quickstep, and the one thing she can't do is step.....quickly. The model doesn't really care for this series, and I mentioned her minimal effort. Instead of relying on the public, I will rely on the judges this week to make her the Lowest Scorer 2.3211/8.
And who knows, a part in my next planned film of 'The Dancing Dobermans' could await.
Week Two Recommended Bets
Back Kimberley Walsh and Denise Van Outen in Highest Score market at 5.04/1 and 2.9215/8
Back Jerry Hall for lowest score at 2.3211/8
Back Richard Arnold in bottom two at 2.47/5
