Goodwood Placepot: Sunday October 14

Goodwood is the venue for Sunday's Placepot.
With Timeform colleague Tony McFadden in the money at Newmarket yesterday, Matt Gardner is confident of adding to the tally with further success at Goodwood on Sunday...
14:00 - The opening leg is difficult to weigh up and, in truth, I'm finding it difficult to visualise how the race will pan out. Therefore it's probably wise to side with three and hope that we emerge unscathed, with Pocket Too, Presto Volante and Sainglend the trio selected. The first mentioned has been off the track for five months, but his current standing in the market suggests that will prove no barrier to potential success and the soft conditions will be of no worry to connections. Presto Volante has tasted success on each of his last two starts and should go well once more if seeing out this additional distance, whilst Sainglend looks pretty well-treated on his Flat form, has been running creditably over hurdles of late and will have no problems with the trip or the ground.
14:35 - Brownsea Pink does not boast the best form on offer in this contest, but he is proven in the conditions and that is more than enough to warrant his inclusion in the 'pot'. The signs prior to Don Marco's debut at Newbury were not particularly promising, having been gelded and equipped with a hood, but there were only positives to take from his fourth-placed effort and he seems sure to go well if handling the ground.
15:10 - Surge Ahead is one of only a few proven under the prevailing conditions and, following an impressive win at Pontefract last month, the Ed Walker-trained two-year-old is included as our sole banker of the day. Shebebi is probably the one to take as insurance for those of you less daring than I, but Surge Ahead has more to come, with the step up to seven furlongs in his favour, and he is a confident selection.
15:45 - Prodigality has hardly had the rub of the green this season, regularly shaping better than the result, and he is most unfortunate to have only entered the winners' enclosure once. This represents an excellent opportunity for the four-year-old to get his head back in front and he seems sure to go well with Coolminx, who relishes soft ground, added as a bit of cover and possibly giving us the opportunity to double-up.
16:20 - I have a sneaking suspicion that A Ladies Man will go well here, as he seems to be highly-regarded by a top yard and the step up in trip could be what he is after, but it is difficult to make a strong enough case to warrant his inclusion in the 'pot'. The pair to instead side with are Excellent Result and Nichols Canyon, with the former catching the when third in a strong maiden at Newmarket; he was not knocked about that day and should do better now. Nichols Canyon has shaped well in two starts to date, looking green on each occasion, and he is another who is likely to do better with the slight step up in trip expected to suit.
16:55 - This is an excellent race with a number of interesting participants and, with that in mind, it is worth taking on likely favourite Danchai as it is possible to see any one of around eight making the places, and the dividend could be higher were he to miss out. The pair to take are Samba King, who seemingly revels in the mud and should stay this trip, and Princess Caetani, a Timeform Notebook entrant who also seems at her best on softer ground.
