Randwick host a quality card on Saturday
The Spring Champion Stakes, which features a couple of unbeaten colts, takes place at Randwick on Saturday...
It is ten years since Gai won her last Group 1 Champion Stakes with Platinum Scissors in 2002, her second win in the race having also prepared subsequent Victoria Derby and Melbourne Cup placegetter Nothin' Leica Dane in 1995.
This year she looks to have a mortgage on the race with unbeaten three-year-old Proisir who just keeps getting better with every run. Last start Proisir completed a hat-trick, winning a below par renewal of the G3 Newcastle Spring Stakes (1600m), a race that traditionally has been a great feeder lead up for the G1 Spring Champion Stakes.
Taken straight to the lead by Nash Rawiller, Proisir was never headed romping home by almost six lengths - the biggest winning margin in the race since its inception in 1984.
Proisir ran to a Timeform rating of 117+ at Newcastle and has a five pound margin over his nearest rival, another unbeaten colt, It's A Dundeel. The New Zealand galloper is undefeated in four starts and has done all his lead up racing in Australia, winning his only three starts and taking his Timeform rating to 112p.
That rating came from his impressive last to first win in the G3 Gloaming Stakes at Randwick over 1800m. The extra 200m this afternoon will suit him perfectly.
Away from the unbeaten pair, Gloaming placegetters Honorius and Lunar Rise rate next best.
