World Cup 2014 Betting: Back Turkey to breach leaky Dutch defence

Louis van Gaal has begun his second spell as Netherlands boss
The Netherlands are hoping to put their EURO 2012 nightmare behind them with Louis van Gaal at the helm, and Kevin Hatchard expects an entertaining clash against Turkey in Amsterdam.

Match Odds: Netherlands 1.511/2, Turkey 7.87/1, the draw 4.67/2
To say the Netherlands underperformed at EURO 2012 is a bit like saying Viv Richards was a decent cricketer, or that the top of the Empire State Building is a bit high up. Bert Van Marwijk's side, which had lost the World Cup final to Spain just two years earlier, put in a trio of horrific performances which saw them dumped out of the group stage without a single point. Risky team selection (Jetro Willems was a complete liability at left-back) was married with disjointed tactics, and to make matters worse star players such as Arjen Robben and Robin Van Persie put in some of the worst displays of their Oranje careers.
The debacle cost Van Marwijk his job, and the KNVB have turned to a familiar face to guide the team to the 2014 World Cup. The irascible Louis van Gaal has been given the nod, and the 61-year-old has reparations to make after failing to win qualification for the 2002 World Cup in his first spell in charge. Van Gaal has a glittering club record, but it remains to be seen whether he can translate that success to the international stage. His first match in charge was hardly encouraging - the Netherlands were 2-1 up with 15 minutes to go against Belgium in Brussels, but collapsed like a house of cards and lost 4-2.
Van Gaal must find a way to stiffen the Dutch defence if he is to be successful - the Netherlands have kept just two clean sheets in their last nine matches, conceding 16 goals in that period. At the other end van Gaal has plenty of firepower at his disposal. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar has looked sharp for Schalke and scored against Belgium, while Van Persie's pushing hard for a recall to the side (he was omitted in Brussels) after scoring four goals in three games for Manchester United.
Turkey's last six friendlies have been played away from home, and they have picked up some impressive results. Just before EURO 2012 they recorded eye-catching victories against Portugal and Ukraine, and since Abdullah Avci replaced Guus Hiddink as manager Turkey have scored at least once in six out of seven matches.
The Netherlands are in a period of transition, and their defensive problems are plain to see. That said, their recent record in World Cup and EURO qualifiers is outstanding. They won eight out of eight in qualifying for the 2010 World Cup, and nine out of ten in reaching EURO 2012. With that record in mind the price of 1.511/2 on offer for a Dutch win is actually quite chunky, but layers may look at Turkey's recent away wins and be tempted.
The value here could be in the goal markets. The Netherlands have been conceding an average of nearly two goals per game over the past ten months, while Turkey are scoring freely under Avci. Yes in the Both Teams to Score market looks appealing at 1.9620/21, as does backing Over 2.5 Goals at 1.824/5.
Recommended Bet: Back Over 2.5 Goals at 1.824/5
Best Bet: Back Both Teams to Score at 1.9620/21
