Ryder Cup Tips: Back big-name Europeans to top score

Luke Donald is a brilliant Matchplay exponent
The battle to be top overall points scorer is one of the liveliest Ryder Cup markets on Betfair. Paul Krishnamurty delivers his verdict...
With the favourite available at odds of 10.09/1, this appears at first glance to be a wide-open heat, but analysis of past Ryder Cups strongly suggests that in fact, only a select few of the 24 candidates have a realistic chance of finishing as Top Scorer. Every clear or joint top-scorer this century played in the full quota of five matches, (or four in the case of the rain-affected 2010 renewal). There are only enough places to go round and identifying that handful of names shouldn't be too difficult.
Given their status and/or tournament record, one must assume Rory McIlroy, Graeme McDowell, Ian Poulter, Luke Donald, Lee Westwood, Justin Rose and Sergio Garcia will play prominent roles, leaving few places available for the five 'lesser' Europeans. Of those, the first four are most fancied to play every round. A strong US team, containing few with good tournament records, is less easier to differentiate between so I doubt more than a couple will play the full quota. It may even be fewer as the most obvious candidates like Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Steve Stricker could be given an afternoon off in favour of one of younger, equally capable players.
For that reason, the leading Europeans make more betting appeal, with Gmac, Poulter and Donald rated the best value. The former has two excellent Ryder Cups to his name, and looks set to partner the much shorter-priced McIlroy. Poulter and Donald are arguably the two finest matchplay exponents around. Both have won the World Matchplay. Both were amongst the joint top-scorers at Celtic Manor, which Poulter won outright previously at Valhalla. Their Ryder Cup success ratios, at 77% and 73% respectively, are amongst the best ever.
