Ryan Moore: My views on Saturday at Doncaster

Ryan's looking forward to St Leger day
We all know what Ryan thinks about the big race but what are his thoughts on the rest of the Doncaster St Leger day card? Read on to find out...

This can be a strange race in that it often suits the more experienced horses rather than the unexposed. I remember getting beaten by Aidan's battle-hardened Super Pistachio on the once-raced Zacinto in this in 2008. And Trumpet Major won this on his seventh start last season. So I wouldn't be in a rush to dismiss the likes of Birdman and Tha'Ir, who have proven themselves solid Group 2 and 3 horses and have plenty of runs under their belt. Of course, they don't appear to have the Group 1 potential of Dundonnell and Toronado, and the market will reflect that. Regular readers will know how highly I rate Dundonnell. He wasn't beating rubbish when winning by 12 lengths at Lingfield - in fact the runner-up won his maiden by four lengths this week - and I was very taken by the change of gears he showed to take control of the Acomb last time. He tired close home a bit there but the horse he beat, Steeler, is well regarded and followed up in a decent listed race at Goodwood next time. He is one of the best 2yos I have seen out this season. Toronado comes here with a big reputation, and I think the Hannon yard think that he is just about the best prospect among their juveniles. He is a good size, not over-big, and he was very impressive first time up at Newbury. He wasn't as flashy last time out at Ascot but he got the job done and the fact that he had to work harder there will stand him in good stead. He has a fair bit to find with Dundonnell, and others, on the bare form of his two wins though, however promising he looks. Dundonnell for me.

Prodigality has snuck in at the bottom of the weights and he will obviously be of plenty of interest, as will Rex Imperator. The latter has obviously been unlucky this season, but he didn't show as much at Bath last time as he had done previously, hampered or not. However, he could be one of those horses who are ideally suited to this trip and it wouldn't be the biggest surprise in the world if he came good. But the one that interests me in this hugely competitive sprint is Picabo. Henry Candy is a past master at progressing these types and Picabo really impressed me with the way he travelled through the race at Newmarket last time - I rode in the race and he was always winning there - and even off a 9lb higher mark I make him the one to beat here.

This is not the strongest of Group 2s but the problem here is finding a horse guaranteed to run his race. And I am struggling. Strong Suit didn't run at all badly in the Sprint Cup at Haydock last weekend, and he looks the best horse in the race. But it remains to be seen whether a week is too quick a turnaround for him and he wouldn't want the ground too tacky. And that is a danger after it has taken four days racing. If he doesn't run up to his best, then I literally think any of the others could take advantage. But plenty of these have to bounce back from below par runs last time as well. A very difficult race to call.
