Stronach Stable's undefeated Awesome Feather, the 2010 two-year-old filly champion and Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies winner at Churchill Downs, will prep for the November 2 Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic at Santa Anita when she runs Thursday in the Nasty Storm Overnight Stakes at Belmont Park.
The four-year-old Florida-bred daughter of Awesome Of Course, trained by Chad Brown, is undefeated in nine career starts but has dealt with tendon issues over the past few seasons and has started just once this year.
Awesome Feather, now rated 122 by Timeform, streaked to a two-year-old championship in 2010, largely on the basis of her Juvenile Fillies win. She ran only twice at three, highlighted by a win in Aqueduct's Gazelle (Group 1) in November and will make her first start since winning Gulfstream Park's Sunshine Millions Distaff January 28 in the Nasty Storm, which will be run over a one-turn mile on Belmont's expansive oval. Brown is hopeful that the Nasty Storm will serve as the ideal prep for the Ladies' Classic at Santa Anita.
"The race is good timing before the Breeders' Cup Ladies Classic, I have roughly six weeks," Brown said.
"She's training super. Her weight is very good, her coat is great, and her works have been perfect. I've brought her down to Belmont and I thought she galloped very well today. If she's sound and in good order, we'll plan on running her."
