Next Wigan Manager: Usual contenders in running to replace Rosler

Rosler's (former) team have only won three league games this season

Betfair has opened a market on Next Wigan Manager after Uwe Rosler was sacked today, following his team's poor start to the Championship season. Dan Thomas has the details...

The former Brentford boss leaves the DW Stadium after just 11 months in charge, with the Latics mired in relegation trouble following just three wins in their first 17 league games.

Rosler, who will be temporarily replaced by assistant manager Graham Barrow while chairman Dave Whelan looks for a replacement, led Wigan to a sixth placed finish last season and the FA Cup semi-finals, after memorably dumping Man City out at the Etihad in the quarter-finals.

But the German has been unable to recreate that good form this season and, while praising Rosler's character and workrate, Whelan said he was left with no other option but to act.

"The situation we find ourselves in at the moment, and the run of results in recent months, really has been alarming," he told the Wigan website.

"Something is clearly not working. For whatever reason, the team is not gelling, despite substantial financial backing in the summer and the dressing room being blessed with a huge amount of quality.

"Therefore, I have now come to the reluctant conclusion that for the long term good of the club, we need a change."

In the Betfair market for Next Wigan Manager, you can back a number of recent Premier League bosses including Malky Mackay - likely to be one of the favourites once liquidity comes in - Chris Hughton, Tim Sherwood or Steve Clarke.

How about a Wigan legend in the form of Mike Pollitt? Or maybe a bright light from the lower leagues such as Karl Robinson or Graham Barrow?

And it wouldn't be a Next Manager market without everyone's favourite out-of-work boss, Alan Curbishley.
