Timeform UK SmartPlays: Monday October 1

Newton Abbot is the venue for today's SmartPlays.

Timeform highlight a trio of SmartPlays at Newton Abbot on Monday...

The Fergal O'Brien-trained Gud Day (15:00) does have to prove himself on very testing ground but he looks well-in under a penalty for his win at Uttoxeter eight days ago and is taken to enter the winners' enclosure once more. That success represented Gud Day's first win in first win in this sphere and a marked improvement in form, travelling smoothly and jumping fluently before winning with plenty in hand, and, if turning up here in a similar mood, he is likely to prove difficult to beat.

We are back in action straightaway, as the well-treated Darceys Dancer can land the 15:30 for trainer Evan Williams. The nine-year-old has been disappointing since finishing third in a listed handicap at Ascot a year ago, running poorly in five of his subsequent six starts, but he is simply too well handicapped to ignore as, having raced off a BHA mark of 135 12 months ago, he now competes off a mark some 20 lb lower. Blinkers are reapplied here and, if ready to go on return from a break, he could take some pegging back.

Moving on to 17:00, where Bazart is taken to gain a fifth career success in this sphere by following up his triumph at Plumpton last week. That effort represented a return to form for the 10-year-old, as he drew clear to win easily and, in similar style to our earlier selection Gud Day, if turning up in the same form he is most likely to go well.
