David's tips both run at Wetherby today
David Cleary outlines a couple of bets at Wetherby today...
Wetherby's first meeting of the autumn has long been a sign of jumping's imminent return to centre stage on the racing front, and today's fixture offers plenty to whet the appetite for the coming winter. Fitness is often a key factor, particularly with runners from some of the more traditionally-run northern yards, and that can only be surmised at this distance.
That said, there do look to be some decent bets on the card, first among them Bothy in the handicap hurdle at 15:25. He's having his first run over hurdles since April last year and he didn't beat many when returning to action on the Flat last month. However, that was his first run on polytrack and was likely being used as a pipe-opener before a return to hurdling. Because of his absence, Bothy has been dropped in the weights and is plainly on a good mark on the form he showed in 2010/11, when he was runner-up in three top handicaps. If he retains his ability, Bothy will be hard to beat.
Earlier, in the handicap chase at 14:50, L'Eldorado looks overpriced and could well pose the biggest threat to the likely favourite Quite The Man. L'Eldorado's two wins over jumps have come after a break, so fitness shouldn't be too much of a worry on his first start since the spring, and unlike several of his rivals, he won't be troubled by the forecast rain softening the ground.
Recommended Bets:
Back Bothy @ 10.09/1 in the 15:25 at Wetherby
Back L'Eldorado @ 14.013/1 in the 14:50 at Wetherby
