Timeform Notebook: The Baronet entitled to more success

Sir Mark Prescott Bt trains The Baronet
Timeform highlight a trio of horses that will be worth following in the coming weeks...
The first horse to merit inclusion into the Notebook is Pearl Street, a $290,000 yearling and half-sister to useful two-year-old winner Peter Martins. Extremely well backed prior to her debut, Pearl Street caught the eye by performing best of those held up, travelling well before staying on to finish in fourth. She didn't enjoy the clearest of passages on that occasion, having found trouble as they entered the straight, and it would be little surprise were she to improve considerably on her next start.
The opening contest of the 2012 Cambridgeshire meeting may have unearthed a potential Derby candidate in the shape of Telescope, but it may well pay to keep a close eye on the sixth-placed horse in that event, Glorious Protector. Ed Walker's debutant shaped with conspicuous promise, travelling strongly having been held up in the early stages, and was in no way subjected to a hard race. With the benefit of that experience behind him, it would be no surprise to see this Group 1-entered colt progress markedly. He holds obvious potential as a long-term prospect, but he displayed enough ability to win a maiden and any future entries should be noted. Elkaayed, who went into the Notebook on the back of a promising effort at Ascot, once again shaped well, finishing in second, and is certainly capable of winning a race.
Having shaped better than the bare result on his handicap debut, when the slow pace played against his strengths, The Baronet improved as anticipated to win at Musselburgh on Sunday, doing so in the style of a horse that remains capable of better. Trained by Sir Mark Prescott Bt, a master at bringing along similar types, The Baronet appears to have plenty of stamina, impressing with the manner he kept to his task having been sent for home over three furlongs out. He looks sure to win more handicaps and will be of definite interest if turned out under a penalty.
Runners Debrief:
Valiant Girl, making her all-weather debut at Kempton, was definitely unlucky not to finish closer than fifth, having been badly hampered as she attempted to make her challenge. She will remain on a fair mark and of interest to us.
It was a fairly quiet weekend in terms of Notebook runners, but Marshgate Lane, although failing to justify favouritism, shaped well enough to suggest that he is worth persevering with. Off the track since his most promising third at Glorious Goodwood, Marshgate Lane impressed with the rapid headway that he made three furlongs out, however, he eventually faltered close home as that sweeping effort told. He shaped like the second best horse at the weights and it is worth giving him another chance.
Looking ahead, Cheworee has obvious claims of winning at Salisbury on Wednesday. She was narrowly beaten at Newmarket, having displayed an impressive cruising speed, and the form is looking strong after Idler, the horse that beat her, subsequently obliterated a field of useful handcappers at the weekend. Alnawiyah is also declared on Wednesday, in a one-mile maiden at Nottingham, and, although it appears to be a competitive race, she is likely to be towards the head of the market.
Barren Brook disappointed at Haydock and may bid to atone for that below-par effort at Redcar on Saturday, where any improvement in ground conditions will enhance his prospects. Miss Dashwood looks to be on a fair mark and she may try to exploit that in handicap company at Wolverhampton this week, where she holds a couple of engagements.
Race And Status made a deep impression when winning on debut at Newbury and he may bid to capture a big prize at Newmarket on Saturday, although he is sure to face some stiff competition as useful performers such as Havana Gold, Ghurair and Tamayuz Star are also engaged.
