League Two Betting: The best bets from the midweek fixtures

Will Lee Mansell rediscover his goal-scoring form?

With a full programme of League Two action in midweek we sent Ian Lamont out in search of the best bets. What did he come up with?

Torquay 2.0621/20 v Aldershot 4.216/5; The Draw 3.55n/a

Reading between the lines is half the battle in sport - when you are not present to witness the body language. The two camps at Plainmoor on Tuesday will be in contrasting moods, it seems. Aldershot boss Dean Holdsworth says the trip will be a "test of character", meaning recent results and performances have not been good enough. One goal in four games (albeit earning a victory) would point to deficiencies that Michael Rankine is desperate to rectify but is not being given the chance. Danny Hylton also says he wants to repay the manager for sticking by him during his long ban, while Scott Donnelly's second debut (after a sale to Swansea and then an injury-hit time at Wycombe) are positives. However, both lack full fitness.

Torquay will be a tougher prospect than Plymouth, where Aldershot got their only away win this season, on the opening day. Drawing at Chesterfield was an indication of solidity, moving towards strength, if even things have not fallen into place as well as the hosts would like, either. But Lee Mansell seems full of confidence that he can re-find scoring form from midfield. Even though he points to having to get used to new colleagues across the middle and the exit of Eunan O'Kane meaning he now has a different, less attacking, role, but is sure he can work it out. The visitors seem in a less good place.

Back Torquay @ 2.0621/20

Southend 1.9420/21 v Burton 4.47/2; The Draw 3.814/5

Watching Burton seems to guarantee goals at the moment, just not always for the Brewers. A 3-3 draw with Northampton is the latest. The league's highest scorers at home are the second lowest away, however, making them vulnerable at places such as Roots Hall. Southend have not been breaking goal records at home, but have Brit Assombalonga, on loan from Watford, in top form. Barry Corr, his rival, is suspended for three games now, so Assombalonga will want to press his case while his hungry rival, bounding with desire after injuries, strains at the leash. Expect Southend to continue an upward curve.

Back Southend @ 1.9420/21

Oxford 1.855/6 v AFC Wimbledon 4.84/1; The Draw 3.814/5

It seems desperately odd to find Oxford propping up the six-game form table without a point to their name. Assistant boss Mickey Lewis seemed to think luck was against the U's who had shots saved by Scott Shearer at Rotherham before conceding twice to lose 3-1. Dropping keeper Ryan Clarke is not the action of a manager, Chris Wilder, who has total faith in his team, but could be construed as being ruthless in his pursuit of finding a solution to what should be a temporary problem of poor results. His chairman set out a plan a few weeks ago to rise two division in five years and it remains to be seen how itchy his trigger finger becomes. Surely past progress counts for something.

As visitors AFC Wimbledon will tell you, however, managers cannot live on past glories. They not only fired theirs but saw off Wycombe's recently. With the pressure on the hosts and Dons players desperate to impress potential bosses watching from the stands, there is a chance of a point -possibly three - at the Kassam Stadium. This is one to go with the form - which makes the price on a home win far too short.

Lay Oxford, who make no value at 1.855/6

Accrington 3.259/4 v Rotherham 2.3211/8; The Draw 3.613/5

Visiting boss Steve Evans sits out a fifth game of six banned, but without him can the Millers find a first away win of the season, this time? They seem to have bumped into several home teams in form, thus far, then drawn at winless Barnet. Maybe the team is still gelling. Accrington don't budge an inch these days, however, giving little away at home albeit not scoring many either. Padraig Amond has three of his four goals at the Crown Ground and, combined with a tight defence, that might be enough to worry the visitors.

Lay Rotherham @ 2.3211/8
