Remember the Brookline green invasion?
Alex Lee takes a trip down memory lane and provides us with some video clips of the greatest moments in Ryder Cup history...
The McDowell Cup
The 2010 Ryder Cup, at the Celtic Manor Resort in Newport, making it the first time the competition had been held in Wales, was remarkable for the performance of Graeme McDowell against Hunter Mahan on the last day. Having previously beaten Johnson and Mahan alongside McIlroy in the Foursome, McDowell clearly felt he had the edge over his final day opponent and so it proved as he triumphed during the final session, held for the first time on a Monday, due to a first-day downpour delaying the schedule.
The best Ryder Cup shot ever?
On the 18th at Palm Beach in 1983, Seve Ballesteros was stuck in the sand and fully 245 yards from the green. Facing a shot that would have given most of us palpitations, the infinitely talented Spaniard simply plucked his three wood out of his bag and smashed the ball to within 18 feet of the pin. "They say great golfers make great shots, but that one made me blink," said Fuzzy Zoeller of Seve's effort.
The War By The Shore
The 1991 Ryder Cup, since known by the sobriquet 'The War By The Shore', was a controversial affair to say the least, best known for bad feeling, rows and all-round macho posturing. Like all the best Ryder Cups, the competition went down to the very last hole, when the normally unflappable German Bernhard Langer missed his putt against Hale Irwin to hand the USA a one point win.
Controversy reigns in '99
At 10-6 down ahead of the final day of the 1999 contest, the USA came back strongly to win 14.5-13.5. The match was steeped in controversy, however, after wild scenes of jubilation followed a 45 foot putt by Justin Leonard. Breaching every golfing etiquette, wives, girlfriends and team-mates piled onto the green to celebrate, despite the match not being over. The celebrations clearly knocked Jose Maria Olazabal's confidence and his missed attempt at a birdie which handed the trophy to the USA was somewhat inevitable.
Europe's glorious success
The 2004 Ryder Cup, held at the Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Township, Michigan, saw Europe trounce the USA, winning by 18 to 9. This was the biggest winning margin by Europe in the event's history. It was also the heaviest margin of defeat for the USA at home as their worst ever defeat since the competition started way back in 1927. Captained by Langer, the likes of McGinley, Montgomerie, Garcia, Poulter and Westwood all rose to the occasion, while Woods, Haas, Cink and co had nothing in the proverbial 'top drawer'.
Faldo clinches it in 1995
Nick Faldo, who still holds the record number of points for a European Ryder Cup player, won a vital singles match over Curtis Strange which all but clinched the Ryder Cup for Europe. Needing to get down in two from 94 yards on the final hole to win, he played a stunning iron shot to within five feet of the hole and duly sank the putt. In a subsequent interview, Faldo said: "It was the best scrambling par I ever made."
