Chicago Cubs @ Washington Nationals
The Cubs travel to the nation's capital after a 7-5 defeat to the San Francisco Giants last night. And they face a winning side in the shape of Washington, who beat St Louis 4-3 yesterday to take three games of the four game series. The Cubs open this series with Jeff Samardzija (8-12, 4.03 ERA) on the mound. Samardzija lost his last start, however he only conceded two earned runs and struck out ten batters. Washington's Ross Detwiler (8-6, 3.32 ERA) won his last start, against Miami. Washington have the best win percentage in the National League (.609) and top ESPN.com's Power Rankings. I'm backing Washington tonight.
Texas Rangers @ Kansas City Royals
Yu Darvish (13-9, 4.31 ERA) joined the Rangers from Japanese baseball this season with high expectations. Texas bid a $51.7m posting fee for his services and signed him to a six-year $60m contract and he has been impressive of late, pitching seven scoreless innings in his last start. Bruce Chen (10-10, 5.13 ERA) won his last start, pitching eight scoreless innings. However this seemed to come out of nowhere. I wouldn't expect him to hold this Rangers offense scoreless, and I'm backing Texas tonight.
ESPN America game
Philadelphia Philles @ Cincinnati Reds
Philadelphia have scheduled Tyler Cloyd (0-1, 4.50 ERA) for this evening's game in what will be his second major league start. He was 12-1 with a 2.35 ERA in the AAA International League, and was named the league's best pitcher last week. He lost his major league debut, giving up three earned runs. Johnny Cueto (17-6, 2.48 ERA) starts for the Reds this evening. The Reds are having a fantastic season, sitting top of the NL Central with a 82-53 record. Cueto is one of the hottest pitchers in baseball, leading the majors with 17 wins. I can't see Cueto and the Reds losing this one.
