Find Me a 100 Winner: Two Brits to relish an Italian birdie-fest

The Italian Open has a long-held reputation as one of the Euro Tour's biggest birdie fests. The highest winning total this century is a mere 16 under par and the average since the event moved to Royal Park I Roveri has been 19 under.
We should therefore know the key statistical qualities to look for - birdie and putting average - along with driving distance as this par-72 is pretty wide open. Elsewhere I've argued that this combination will best suit one of the favourites, Nicolas Colsaerts, but a couple of British outsiders also catch the eye.
Peter Whiteford usually enjoys this kind of set-up and it is no surprise to see that he's finished fourth and 13th in the last two renewals. The 32 year-old Scot ranks sixth for putting average and a respectable 33rd for birdies on the European Tour over the past three months. (Remember, many of those above him aren't playing this week). Top-tens at Gleneagles and Castle Stuart - both of which hosted low-scoring events - represent good recent form and suggest there's at least some trading mileage at odds of 180.0179/1.
Secondly, I'm giving one of last week's failed selections another chance. Matthew Baldwin started slowly in the KLM Open and therefore never threatened to reach our lay target but he did stay on strongly for 21st - his third top-25 in five starts following fifth in the Scottish Open and 23rd on a fine Open Championship debut. Lets also not forget he made the cut at the US Open - no mean feat for a debutant, especially one with no PGA Tour experience. Baldwin ranked ninth for birdies last week and is equal to Whiteford over the past three months. Odds of 340.0339/1 are simply too big about this clearly capable rookie.
The trading advice is to stake three units in total, then place lay orders at 20.019/1 and 3.02/1 on both men. Just by hitting that first, relatively unambitious lay target, we'll quadruple our initial stake.
