Danny Ings impressed again for Burnley
Goals from George Boyd and Papiss Cisse ensured the scores finished level between Burnley and Newcastle at Turf Moor. Alex Johnson reports on the match.
Both these teams came into this game having enjoyed somewhat of a resurgence of late. Burnley were on a three-game unbeaten run and could climb out of the bottom three, while Newcastle's defeat to West Ham at the weekend ended a five-game winning run and they were desperate to get back to winning ways.
Burnley started the stronger of the two teams and had the first chance of the game. It fell to their in-form striker Danny Ings, who got in-between two defenders and his shot was well stopped one-handed by Newcastle keeper Rob Elliot.
Not long after and they wasted another good opening. Ings was heavily involved again as he laid it off to Ashley Barnes, who blasted a shot over the crossbar from inside the penalty area.

After a slow start, Newcastle gradually started to come into the game and Sammy Ameobi tested Tom Heaton with an angled shot, before Medhi Abeid bursted through on goal after a neat flick from Ayoze Perez only to be thwarted by the strong palms of the Burnley keeper.
Burnley took the lead with 34 minutes on the clock when Ings did well to knock down a cross into the path of Boyd on the edge of the Newcastle box. The deadline day signing from Hull took one touch before blasting a powerful strike that flew in as Elliot was unsighted by the amount of bodies in front of him.
The hosts should have gone in with a two-goal lead at the break. Boyd back-heeled the ball into the path of David Jones on the run in the box but the midfielder failed to hit the target from 12 yards out.
Alan Pardew made two half-time changes, most noticeably bringing on Remy Cabella for the ineffectual Perez, and his team-talk had an immediate impression as Newcastle were level three minutes into the second half.
After Burnley failed to properly clear their lines, a cross from Daryl Janmaat was dummied by Yoan Gouffran at the near post and Cisse was in the perfect position to bury a half-volley from six yards out.
That goal really sparked Newcastle on and they dominated proceedings for most of the second half. However, for all their good work, the final ball was lacking on far too many occasions and they failed to test Heaton again before the final whistle. Abeid tried his luck from range on a couple of occasions, but his accuracy was way off and failed to trouble the goal.
There was a lot of huff and puff but little real quality from both teams for the majority of the second half and there was little goalmouth action of note after Cisse's strike. In reality Newcastle were the better of the sides, but Burnley came narrowly close to winning all three points when Ben Mee got his head on a Boyd free-kick but put the effort wide of the post from 12 yards out.
With the scores level at full-time, it ensured Burnley extended their recent unbeaten run but Newcastle boss Pardew will be disappointed his side didn't get the winner their dominance after the break deserved. The results elsewhere on the night mean that Burnley climb out of the relegation places, while Newcastle drop to 10th in the Premier League table.
