World Cup 2014: How do Golden Boot odds compare to strikers' form?

One of the most popular areas on Betfair's Exchange this summer is likely to be the Golden Boot market. But whose odds most accurately reflect their goalscoring form? Infographic whizzkid Matt Isherwood takes a look...

While lifting the World Cup itself is a dream that every international player has, and football is obviously a team sport, goalscorers understandably have half an eye on the famous World Cup Golden Boot award for top scorer, something that has been won by many greats of the game down the years - the great Ronaldo in 2002, Portugal's Eusebio in 1966, West Germany's Gerd Mueller in 1970, and England's own Gary Lineker 1986.

But who is most likely to get their hands on the prize this summer in Brazil? One way of looking at this is analysing some of the favourites' current goalscoring form for their club, including their goals-to-games ratio, and working out how that compares to their current odds on the Exchange.

Based on goalscoring form and odds alone, Neymar of Brazil looks very short at 12.011/1 (although his international record far outstrips that of his club), whereas the value could well lie in Cristiano Ronaldo at 18.5n/a. Already voted the world's best player, his goal record this season is well over a goal a game and Portugal could well be fancied to go far in the tournament based on the draw, giving him plenty of opportunity to find the back of the net.

Luis Suarez would perhaps also warrant attention at 27.026/1; his Uruguay side did far better than expected in 2010, reaching the semi-final, and he has had a rip-roaring season for Liverpool. That said, he is fighting to be fit after injury which could work against him.

Sergio Aguero is sure to start for Argentina and they are surely destined to go deep in the tournament, and 16.015/1 looks a good price for a man who managed to net 28 times last season for Manchester City despite missing a decent amount of games through injury, and who also has over 20 international goals to his name.

All those players aside though, Lionel Messi, who has scored a frankly remarkable 312 goals in his last six seasons for Barcelona and also netted 18 in his last 16 for his country, sits favourite at 8.415/2 and could feasibly net a hatful against Iran. Worth considering when making your selection.
