Though inevitably slipping down the golfing hierachy in his forties, Mickelson has proved this year that he remains a threat to all, especially in his favourite events. In addition to victory in the Phoenix Open, top-three finishes in high-class events at Doral, Quail Hollow and last week at Southwind must raise hopes that he can finally win a major in which he's been runner-up no fewer than five times. There must be a concern regarding Phil's inaccurate tendencies around Merion's tight layout, but his last three rounds of 67/65/67 read like the perfect warm-up.
