Royal Ascot SmartPlays: Wednesday June 19

Richard Hannon is the trainer of Montiridge.

Timeform highlight a trio of bets on the second day of Royal Ascot 2013...

14:30 JERSEY STAKES - MONTIRIDGE

21 go to post for the opening event on day two of Royal Ascot, the Group 3 Jersey Stakes, but it isn't as competitive as the number would suggest and can readily be narrowed down to a shortlist of just four. Garswood's effort in the 2000 Guineas is worth forgiving and he is better judged on his win in the Free Handicap, though that form doesn't look the strongest, whilst Gale Force Ten seems sure to run his race but appears to have reached his limit in form terms. Unbeaten French raider Mutin has to be respected but has a little bit to find on form so the best option looks to be Montiridge.

Montiridge looked most promising last year, landing a strong maiden on debut prior to following that up with further success in a minor event at Sandown; he found only Trading Leather too strong on his final start in the Autumn Stakes and began his three-year-old campaign with an abundance of potential. Connections were brought down to earth somewhat as Montiridge met defeat on his seasonal return at Windsor, racing too freely in a tactical affair, but he shaped well nonetheless and resumed his earlier progress when landing a listed event at Sandown last month.

As things turned out Montiridge had little to beat that day, with two of his three rivals performing below expectations, but it was hard not to be taken by the manner of his success and he remains open to further improvement.

15:45 PRINCE OF WALES'S - AL KAZEEM

The Fugue arguably makes most appeal at the prices in the Prince Of Wales's Stakes as, at her best, she would not be very far away at all but she comes here without a run this season and is taking on the opposite sex, so we may be best to focus on the reopposing pair of Al Kazeem and Camelot.

Al Kazeem defeated Camelot fair and square in the Tattersalls Gold Cup last month and the latter had no real excuses. He ran to a Timeform performance rating of 125, which is not far off his personal best of 128 achieved in the Derby last year and adds further weight to the theory that last season's three-year-old's were not a vintage crop.

Al Kazeem was sidelined through injury after winning the Jockey Club Stakes last year but he demonstrated his wellbeing with success in a decent Group 3 at Sandown in April before getting the better of Camelot at the Curragh, ranging up to challenge a furlong out and forging clear once asked by James Doyle. That effort was his best to date and represented his first win at the top level; on that evidence it will not prove to be his last.

17:00 QUEEN MARY STAKES - BELDALE MEMORY

The unbeaten Beldale Memory looks to hold a decent chance of emulating last year's Queen Mary winner Ceiling Kitty by landing this race on the back of success in York's Marygate Stakes. Beldale Memory has made the perfect start to her career, winning a maiden at Bath on her racecourse debut before following up in the aforementioned York event, travelling smoothly before putting the race to bed. She looks a smart prospect for trainer Clive Cox and it would be a disappointment were she not to go close.
