Max Kieffer is the next big star of German golf
Following an enthralling US Open weekend, the European Tour takes centre stage with a high-class field assembled for this regular Munich fixture, where Paul Krishnamurty has identified three up and coming players to take on the big guns...
Considering the European Tour has struggled to attract top-class fields this year, the line-up for this week's BMW International Open is surprisingly impressive. Numerous US Open contenders tee it up, but I'm always loathe to back players in the week following a major, especially on a different continent. In fact, the presence of stars like Ernie Els and Dustin Johnson has the effect of inflating the odds of Euro regulars who have no reason to be lacking in preparation or purpose.
All three selections are promising, up and coming players, yet to win but certainly capable of getting into the mix. Although Emiliano Grillo has been backed a couple of times without success, I'm determined to persevere with the young Argentinian. He is clearly progressing, making the top-30 on seven of last nine starts, and it can only a matter of time before he gets into serious contention somewhere. This week looks ideal. Drive the ball well on this course and you'll get birdie chances, so it bodes well that Grillo ranks third amongst these for total driving over the last three months.
Paul Waring fares even better in those total driving stats, ranking second over the same timeframe. Waring has more experience than the other two picks but is still only 28 and apparently making progress. He's registered top-25s on four of his last six starts, twice finishing top-five, including last time out in Austria. He's also demonstrated a liking for this Nord-Eichenried layout by finishing 11th here in 2010.
Finally with home advantage and one would assume some course experience in the bag, it makes sense to back the most promising young German player. That logic paid off when Martin Kaymer won his second Euro Tour title here at the age of 23 and, while Max Kieffer has yet to show quite the same potential, he clearly has some. After graduating from last year's Challenge Tour, Kieffer caught the eye when finishing fourth on his first Race to Dubai event in South Africa, then losing a play-off for the Spanish Open.
The trading plan is to stake a total of six units on our trio, at prices ranging from 130.0129/1 to 210.0209/1, then place two lay orders on each player at 10.09/1 and 3.02/1. If any hits the first target, we'll more than triple our initial outlay, whilst retaining a substantial extra position.
