Timeform UK SmartPlays: Monday June 17

Today's first bet comes from Kempton

A case of the calm before the storm ahead of Royal Ascot, though there are still some appealing bets to be had at Kempton and Carlisle.

We start on the polytrack, in a handicap for three-year-olds over five furlongs at 15:00. Speed is especially important over Kempton's five, which takes in a fairly sharp bend soon after the start. With that considered, preference is for the Richard Hannon-trained Royal Challis. His best effort came when winning a decent maiden over the minimum trip at Windsor, while there are excuses for a slightly lesser performance over six there last time. Pearl Bridge is the chief threat, his maiden form even stronger with the placed horses both winning since, but that came over six furlongs and was hardly a performance that promised improvement dropped back to a sharp five. With Royal Challis a much bigger price at the time of writing, he's a more attractive option.

Our other two selections run in Cumbria, starting with their handicap for fillies at 16:45. There's the potential for some destructive interference between market principals Silkelly and Tussie Mussie, both being prominent racers. Assuming that doesn't come to pass, the pair should be firmly in the reckoning, with current second-favourite Tussie Mussiegetting the verdict. She's run a couple of career-bests this year so far, while suggesting this drop back to seven furlongs will help if anything. Silkelly is respected, but she's been raised 6 lb for winning a very weak handicap on reappearance and thus far has looked more about speed, something that Carlisle's stiff finish doesn't cater especially well for.

The topography of the Carlisle course also forms part of the case for SmartPlay number three, which runs in the 17:15. Hydrant, a fairly new recruit to the Richard Guest yard from Peter Salmon, has proven his stamina over further and is one of few established front runners in the field. It stands to reason, then, that if he gets a break on the field he'll prove difficult to peg back. Hydrant is now as low in the weights as he's been since winning at Nottingham around this time last year and shaped as though coming back to the top of his game when edged out at Nottingham on his recent reappearance.
