St James's Palace Stakes: Timeform's runner-by-runner guide

Dawn Approach can bounce back to winning ways

Timeform assess the chances of each runner in a fantastic renewal of the St James's Palace Stakes...

Dawn Approach is a top-class colt who was unbeaten at 2, and most impressive when winning the Guineas on return by 5 lengths. Pulled too hard in Derby since and can bounce back in style back down in trip.

Dundonnell improved on facile maiden win when landing Acomb Stakes at York, and good second to Toronado in Champagne Stakes. Better for return when winning listed race at Newmarket but probably not up to this.

George Vancouver was second in the Prix Morny prior to winning Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf on final start at 2 yrs. Struggled in 2000 Guineas at Newmarket and Irish version both starts this term, however.

Glory Awaits was useful as a 2-y-o, and ran the race of his life when runner-up to Dawn Approach in 2000 Guineas in first-time blinkers last time. Not sure he'll reproduce that again, however.

Leitir Mor won a Curragh Group 3 last year and also second to in Dewhurst. Confirmed himself a smart colt when winning Group 3 at Leopardstown last week but likely pacemaker for stablemate Dawn Approach.

Magician was useful at 2 but has looked potentially top class both starts this term, winning Dee Stakes at Chester before impressing in Irish 2000 Guineas. Reportedly suffered a setback last week, however.

Mars was an easy winner of Dundalk maiden sole start at 2, and far from disgraced fast tracked straight to Group 1 level both starts this term, sixth in 2000 Guineas and Derby. Remains unexposed.

Mshawish is a French raider who improved again when a keeping-on fourth to Intello in the Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly last time. Should have more to offer but unlikely it will be back at this trip.

Toronado is an imposing sort who was unbeaten at 2, and most impressive winner of Craven on return. Failed to meet expectations in 2000 Guineas but well worth another chance.

Timeform 1-2-3:
1. Dawn Approach
2. Toronado
3. Magician

Timeform View: With Magician having reportedly suffered a setback last week, Dawn Approach seems the logical choice despite his antics in the Derby earlier this month, especially with stablemate Leitir Mor likely to set a good pace. Toronado may emerge as the biggest threat if bouncing back from a disappointing run in the 2000 Guineas.
