Newmarket Placepot: Friday June 7

Jamie Spencer will be aboard Burning Dawn at 14:40.

Timeform's Matt Gardner attempts to land the Placepot at Newmarket on Friday...

14:10 - Ihtimal, out of a half-sister to 2007 Prix Diane winner West Wind, showed plenty on debut when second to a useful prospect at Goodwood, finishing well clear of the rest of the pack, and she makes plenty of appeal in the opening leg. To be on the safe side however we're also going to include Swiss Kiss who hails from an excellent sprinting family, being a half-sister to Swiss Spirit, Swiss Diva and Swiss Dream, and it would come as no surprise were she to go well on debut for trainer John Gosden.

14:40 - Jubilante and Exceptionelle could go well here, the latter particularly so if she has learnt to settle, but Burning Dawn is the one to side with. The three-year-old left her debut form well behind when scoring on handicap debut at Yarmouth last month, still not quite looking the finished article but finding plenty to hit the front and eventually scoring with something in hand. She almost certainly has more to offer and seems unlikely to be inconvenienced by a 5 lb rise in the weights.

15:10 - Plenty of these make some sort of appeal so we definitely need two on side, and we're going to place all of our eggs in one basket by looking to a maiden that took place on the Rowley mile in May. Great Hall and Fledged finished sixth and seventh respectively in a race won by the promising Elkaayed and they both look open to further improvement; hopefully at least one of them can hit the places.

15:45 - The Roger Charlton-trained Top Offer could make a mockery of his handicap mark if the hype from earlier in his career is finally realised by his is by no means a Placepot horse so we shall side with three of his rivals, starting with Born To Surprise who caught the eye having endured a luckless run at Doncaster last time. He needs to prove that he can perform away from Town Moor but he remains unexposed and looks set to go well. Axiom hasn't won since August of 2010 but is potentially well treated as a result and has gone well fresh in the past, so this could just be the time to catch him, whilst Albaqaa appears to be back in the groove, for all that he was a fortunate winner last time, and remains on a fair mark when judged against his old form.

16:20 - Number One London, Chesterfield, Cat O'Mountain and Feel Like Dancing are all worth of respect but it is impossible to overlook Maputo, who is bred to be smart and made a taking handicap debut when bolting up at Redcar last Monday. He runs here under a penalty and could easily turn this into a procession.

16:55 - There is very little between these on BHA ratings in this classified event but Aneedh, who improved a chunk when finding one to good on his penultimate start, gets the vote. He didn't need to match that form when getting off the mark in a Redcar maiden but he won readily under a hands-and-heels ride and it is not out of the question that he could pull out a bit more improvement.
