In a race perhaps lacking depth, it might be worth taking a chance that Shore Step can belatedly build on the promise of his debut effort and land the Newmarket opener. He shaped well on his racecourse bow, finishing sixth at Nottingham in a race that has subsequently worked out very well. It was perhaps disappointing that he didn't improve when next seen on the track, reappearing ten weeks later at Bath, but it is too early to write off Mick Channon's colt, especially as today's race doesn't look strong.

We don't have long to wait until our next SmartPlay as we opt for the unbeaten Up To Something in the opening race at Uttoxeter, due off at 12:50. The Charlie Longsdon-trained gelding has won on all four starts, winning on his hurdles debut last time having already notched up three Bumper wins. He looked like a smart performer in those National Hunt Flat races and there was conspicuous promise on his bow over obstacles, responding well to pressure and asserting between the final two flights. He shaped as if further would suit, so he should relish today's step up in trip.

Require looked better than ever when winning at Leicester recently and should be capable of giving another good account in the 14:10 at Newmarket. Luca Cumani's three-year-old is by no means fully exposed and it would be little surprise were she capable of better. She has proven that she is effective on a softer surface, so conditions are unlikely to pose a problem, and there is no reason to suspect she won't go close to supplementing her latest win.
