Balbriggan will run at Ascot at 13:10.
Rory Delargy heads to Ascot and Lingfield for today's bets...
Mick Channon has made quite an impact since taking over the training of those horses which have become part of his team after the retirement of Henrietta Knight, and he can gain another success when Balbriggan takes his first step into handicap company in the BAM Construct UK Novices' Handicap Chase at Ascot (13:10) today. The son of King's Theatre looked nothing out of the ordinary over hurdles for Knight, but looked an entirely different proposition when winning a beginners chase at Bangor last month. That was a ratings-restricted contest, but most of his rivals were officially better than him over timber. It was hard to comprehend that notion the way he jumped his field into submission there, and he looked a cut above that 0-110 level. He's been raised from his hurdle mark of 102 to 115, but that doesn't seem at all harsh given the manner of his victory, and the step up to 3m looks well within his compass. Main danger on paper is Jonjo O'Neill's Full of Joy, who has a reputation for running well fresh, so will be expected by many to shrug aside a 12-month lay-off. My problem is the continued poor form of the Jackdaws Castle team - while there has been a smattering of winners in recent weeks, there have been far too many poor runs from the yard, including the eclipse of the much-touted Shutthefrontdoor at Folkestone on Tuesday. Tigre d'Aron has been beaten twice in handicap company over hurdles, and looked of similar merit on his chase debut, suggesting he'll remain vulnerable from his current mark.
At Lingfield, it's hard to look past Equitania in the 32Red Conditions Stakes at 12:45. She boasts the best form in this race, having won on turf here for Richard Hannon, and showed her versatility when scoring on her sole start for David O'Meara at Southwell last time. The fact that she has changed hands again after that claiming race win will put many punters off, but running in such a race made commercial sense for her previous owners, and it's likely that her new connections, owner John Stocker and trainer Alan Bailey, had their eye on her when she went to the sales anyway, as they landed this race last year with Storming Bernard. The Southwell form is sound, and this race looks weak for the money on offer, and main danger Fat Gary failed to meet market expectations on his polytrack debut last time. Equitania looks overpriced at around 4.4, and would appeal at much shorter odds for the underrated Bailey yard.
