It is Troytown day at Navan
Today's meeting at Navan has been given the go ahead after an inspection and we have picked out three more SmartPlays.....
The Troytown handicap chase is the feature race on today's card at Navan and, as always, it is possible to make a case for quite a few in this typically competitive contest. Romanesco is sure to be popular with punters, especially with Ruby Walsh taking the ride, but it may be worth siding with one who has yet to break his duck over fences, namely Ballyburke. Phillip Rothwell's charge has finished second on three of his four tries over fences, including in a competitive novice handicap at this course and distance in March, and he comes here fit from a couple of spins over hurdles. Ballyburke tends to go well at this track, is still unexposed at three miles and has a nice racing weight of just 10-4 on his back.
Sword of Destiny was unlucky not to open his account over fences at the first time of asking at Punchestown last month, having just taken the measure of Buckers Bridge when losing all momentum at the last, but he may have to settle for a minor role again in the 14:55. The drop back to this trip isn't certain to suit Sword of Destiny (won over three miles last season) and there are plenty of viable alternatives in opposition, notably the Grade 1-winning novice hurdler Alderwood.
There are nine previous bumper winners in the field for the concluding mares' bumper but the one that makes most appeal here is the once-raced Joanne One who really caught the eye when coming from a long way back to finish a never-nearer second to Que Pasa on debut at Cork. Joanne One hails from a yard with a good record in these events, is likely to be suited by this stiffer track and Colin Motherway takes over from an inexperienced 7 lb claimer.
