Kauto Star's Biggest Fan: Ladies and gentlemen we have a Wynner!

Wyn shows off his Kauto colours

Competition was stiff but we have finally found the UK's biggest Kauto fanatic - Wyn Evans, a seemingly respectable banker whose fanaticism for the wonder horse knows no bounds...

If you thought Alan Partridge's stalker was committed - or rather deserved to be committed,  see this clip if you want to compare - then let us introduce you to Wyn Evans, winner of Betfair and Haydock Park's search for Kauto Star's biggest fan.

And, in Kauto Star's trainer Paul Nicholls' own words, Evans' entry makes "Alan Partridge's obsessive fan look tame by comparison - and a worthy, if slightly worrying, winner. We look forward, with some trepidation, to meeting him at Haydock on Saturday!"

Evans may not be one of the seven applicants who had a Kauto Star tattoo adorning their body but the man's soul is presumably yellow, green and purple.

Ever since he saw Kauto Star win the 2006 Betfair Chase on TV, Evans has never missed a race featuring the legendary chaser - but his obsession with the horse has ramped up a notch since 2010.

A seemingly shameless Evans, a respectable banker by day -  even though his office is a shrine to the great chaser - has done the following, among other things:

• In 2010 he had a jumper knitted in Kauto's colours and proudly boasts that he wears it "whenever I am at the races - or any occasion I can show it off."  Including "dress down days at work," according to his daughter.

Very Partidgesque, his daughter must be proud.

• "Probably my greatest achievement" he writes - which must be very comforting to his wife and daughter - is inspiring an office of non-racing bankers to follow in Kauto's fortunes leading up the to last year's Gold Cup.

Racing For Change, eat your heart out...

• His family made him a Kauto Star cake for his 50th birthday, when his wife also replaced all the photos of her with pictures of Kauto.

In spite of the above....

• In aid of charity, he hosted his own Kauto-themed version of Channel 4's Come Dine With Me, "where all guests had to wear green and yellow and spent the evening watching all my recordings of his great races."

What TV Gold that would have made...

• He names all his quiz teams the "Kauto's Stars", including at his bank's Manchester Regional Quiz Night.

That would have gone down well with the bosses. Banks love a gambler, after all.

• He claims to have led the paddock cheering for Kauto Star at Haydock last year - "you can clearly hear me on Youtube" - where even "Alice Plunkett complimented me on the jumper."

After much discussion by the judges, he narrowly avoided instant disqualification after Plunkett's seal of approval...

• He emailed Tanya Stevenson last year, trying to get on the Morning Line at Haydock on Betfair Chase Day, citing his "Kauto love"

Unfortunately for Evans, Paul Nicholls just shaded it as the main guest on the programme. But ever-diplomatic Tanya acknowledged in an email response that Evans "must be his number one fan"

• Last year he grew a moustache for Movember - and, you've guessed it, dyed it yellow, green and purple. Pure class...

On a more serious note and all joking aside, Evans stood out for his dedication and love of the horse, and he wins a VIP day out at Haydock on Saturday, where he will get to meet the horse and all the connections.

But he certainly faced some stiff competition.

The five runner-ups included Chris Reddross, a businessman from Glasgow, who now runs "Kauto Couriers" - and one of his vans will be at Haydock on Saturday, having been adorned in Kauto colours just for the day. He wins some signed memorabilia, including the Kauto Star book kindly donated by the Racing Post, along with the aforementioned "Girl With The Agony Tattoo", Diana Young, as well as a young Lois Mortimer, whose bedroom heavily features the horse and has "Kauto v Denman races up the stairs" with her sister.

Niki Jones, who has painstakingly cross-stitched pictures of the horse, also narrowly missed out, as did the bride, Michelle Hussey, who themed her wedding around the horse, including down to the men's cufflinks and her own garter.
