Racing in Dubai gets underway at Jebel Ali today
The racing season in Dubai gets underway today, and Timeform have three SmartPlays at Jebel Ali.
The maiden at 10:35 is an interesting race in which the market could be dominated by Desert of Dreams. He undoubtedly has the best form having finished second in a nursery at the Curragh last time when in the care of Paul Deegan, but racing on this unforgiving dirt surface in a completely different climate could just be too much for him at this relatively early stage of his development and I prefer to look elsewhere. Glenleven is feared having attracted plenty of support prior to his underwhelming debut but Ballroom Blitz looks the one to be on. She is proven on a dirt surface, should appreciate the drop to 5f having shown plenty of speed over further last season and Doug Watson can usually be relied upon to have his string well forward for the beginning of the season.
My Verse looks the best bet on the card in the 5f handicap at 11:35. The selection hasn't been seen since last December but she has an excellent record first time out, enhanced last season when second to Mujaazef in this corresponding event, a horse that went on to win his next two races. She also won this very race back at the start of the 2010/11 season, so everything looks in place for a big run.
The rest of the card looks very tricky but Formal Demand could be worth risking on his first start for Doug Watson in the 12:05. Formerly trained by Ed Vaughan, this strong-traveller was a winner at Southwell in June 2011 and was far from disgraced in a couple of subsequent outings back on turf. His style of racing and the fact he did win so well on fibresand raises hope for him handling this dirt surface and he could be open to further improvement for a yard that does so well with similar types.
