Saturday is Derby day at Flemington

Derby Day is always a great betting day and this year looks no exception. Here are Timeform's three SmartPlays.

The Wakeful Stakes (01:40 GMT) for the fillies is typically won by a filly coming through the Thousand Guineas and that trend is set to continue with the two fillies at the top of the market, Dear Demi and Zydeco, coming off top runs in the mile classic. There was very little between them there but with Dear Demi under a hefty penalty today Zydeco rates clear and she looks the filly with the bigger upside, Dear Demi having been kept very busy so far this spring. They look too close in the market with Zydeco over the odds for a filly that seemingly has all in her favour.

The Coolmore Stud Stakes (02:20 GMT) for the three-year-old sprinters gives Fastnet Rock filly Nechita a terrific chance to atone for her Golden Rose defeat back in September. Early favourite Snitzerland is the best performed in the race but despite winning her form has regressed slightly in her latest couple and she looks vulnerable now. Nechita is a filly on the rise and back to 1200m, fresh, she can take plenty of stopping.

John Thompson and Christian Reith pair up again later on the card with Group 1 winning mare Pear Tart in the Myer Classic (04:45 GMT). Pear Tart was unlucky when runner-up behind current favourite Streama in the key lead up to today the Tristarc Stakes over 1400m at Caulfield. She should have finished closer than she did and she's open to good improvement going to the mile for the first time today. Expecting she will relish the longer journey and the market appears to have undersold the chances of her reversing that form.
