Follow The Money: Southwell special!

Can Charlie Longsdon give us a winner with our third bet of the day?

Today's Follow The Money movers all come from this afternoon's Southwell card.

Our first selection is the day's negative and comes in the shape of Kilvergan Boy in the 13:10 who has drifted in trading this morning from 2.1211/10 out to 2.727/4. Nigel Twiston-Davies's charge has the best profile of these chasers but, equally, the gelding has been known to frustrate during his career - he went some 22 races without a win from his first time out victory in January 2009 to his next success in June 2011. Two subsequent visits to the winner's enclosure and no less than six second-place finishes from his last 12 runs have ensured that Kilvergan Boy now has to defy a career high winning mark. While we have no reason to doubt that he will run a race, we do believe that he may fall short when it comes to landing the spoils.

In the next, the novice hurdle at 13:45, Makari has cemented his place at the top of the market having been supported from a high of 2.77/4 in to 2.01/1. Almost everything Nicky Henderson throws at the wall seems to stick these days and that is confirmed by the fact that he has enjoyed a conversion rate of 33% over the last five years at this track. Makari was no cheap purchase but failed to live up to his lofty reputation in four runs under Noel Wilson last season. The switch to Henderson's yard, however, paid immediate dividends with a workman like win at Fakenham last month. Today's money suggests there is more to come.

Our final mover comes in the handicap 2m 4f handicap at 14:15 where Joseph Lister is the one for the money having been backed from about the 5.24/1 mark in to its current price of 3.412/5. Charlie Longsdon served much of his apprenticeship with the aforementioned Henderson during which time he won the "Alex Scott Memorial Scholarship" in 2004 which then allowed him to work overseas with champion US flat trainer Todd Pletcher. It hasn't taken Longsdon long to put the knowledge gained from those mentors to good use - as six winners and three seconds from his last 16 runners suggests. Jospeh Lister enjoyed a decent pipe opener when second at Fontwell and with everything in his favour today must go close.
