Stoke's new signing could have a major impact this season
Andrew Hughes thinks Stoke can beat Aston Villa on Saturday and help to land another cross-sport multiple in the process.
Bet 1: Back Stoke to beat Aston Villa at 1.910/11
Stoke defied the doubters to finish ninth last season, and can continue to build on that good work with an opening day victory over Aston Villa.
Villa have banked on experience in their summer transfer activity, but the uncertainty over the ownership of the club has not helped their preparations and it looks as though another season-long relegation struggle beckons.
Stoke have made an excellent signing in young forward Bojan Krkic, who can add flair and plenty of goals to last season's successful game-plan. Villa are on a run of six consecutive away defeats in the Premier League and lost both fixtures against Stoke last season. Back the home side to grab the points.
Bet 2: Back Guyana to beat Barbados at 1.728/11
Barbados and Guyana finished first and second respectively in the group stage of the Caribbean Premier League, but I'm backing Guyana to win Saturday's final.
The two teams are well-matched, but having qualified for the final by finishing top of the table, Barbados haven't played for a week, whereas Guyana have been building up some momentum. Having won their last two league games, they defeated the Caribbean's two strongest Twenty20 teams in consecutive days, narrowly edging out Trinidad on Wednesday before crushing Chris Gayle's Jamaica on Thursday.
They beat Barbados fairly comfortably in their only league meeting and can do so again to go one-better than the runners-up spot they achieved last year.
Bet 3: Back Cheetahs to beat Griquas at 1.42/5
Both sides kicked off their Currie Cup campaigns with a hard-fought defeat last weekend, but I'm backing Cheetahs to get their first win of the season on Saturday.
The Cheetahs are a team in transition and were surprised by the Pumas in their opener, but back on their home patch, they will be a much tougher proposition and ought to be able to beat last season's bottom team. Griquas battled well against Sharks in their first game, but they still came up short and they have lost each of their last four games in Bloemfontain. Back the Cheetahs for the win.
