Dermot Weld: trainer of Sleeping Beauty
Our Irish team select their best bets from Fairyhouse this evening...
Dundalk maiden winner Burn The Boats (17:55) ran well in good Newbury handicap on his penultimate start and was eye-catching in fifth in another strong Curragh handicap on his latest. He can open his turf account this evening. Talitha Kum will find this company more to her liking than the Classic Trial field she encountered last time but the ground is a worry, while Hazy Glow, who was quietly progressive last season, would need to bounce back from a poor run to figure now.
In the 19:25, the well-bred Penny Serenade (a daughter of Lawman from family of Pilsudski) is fancied. She shaped well in first-time hood on handicap when fourth at Dundalk in April, on which day she was hampered and not knocked about. She has obvious claims off the same mark, while the market should prove indicative with regards to several of her unexposed rivals.
Finally in the 19:55, market confidence for Venus de Milo would look significant but irrespective of that Sleeping Beauty sets a good standard and can put her experience to good use. Sleeping Beauty ticks plenty of the right boxes on pedigree, by Oasis Dream out of an Irish 1000 Guineas winner, and built on debut when third in listed race at Navan in May. She would be tough to beat if building further on that.
