Big Boo just has to be backed!
It's the week before the US Open but there's still some important golf to be played and Dan Geraghty fancies the following foursome to bring home the bacon at the St Jude Classic...
Boo Weekley's ball striking has been largely sublime this year and the easygoing American looks well on his way to a second Ryder Cup appearance after his wonderful iron play was rewarded with a victory last time out at the Crowne Plaza. Weekley's play this year has been in direct contrast to that of three-ball second favourite Ian Poulter who has been in desperate form. The omens aren't good for the Englishman who also missed the cut on his only appearance to date in this tournament. David Toms makes up the the trio, he's missed his last two cuts this year and hasn't mde the weekend the last two occasions he's played the St Jude.
DJ Trahan has been in the top 20 at the St Jude twice in the past three years. His three-ball opponents have similar bits of form at TPC Southwind but, at the prices, outsider Trahan is the bet in what looks a tight three-ball.
Given his recent time off with injury, Dustin Johnson's missed cut last week wasn't a huge surprise. However, with that outing behind him, Johnson should be sharper again this week at a tournament where he holds a 100% record. His victory on debut last year reads very well and the big-hitting American will be keen to get four rounds under his belt here with next week's US Open looming. He can start by outscoring Brandt Snedeker and Davis Love III in round one.
Last time (and first time) Fabian Gomez played the St Jude (2011), he finished 15th. His price 3.613/5 to get the better of Lee Janzen and Robert Karlsson on day one looks too big. Janzen was infamously disqualified from US Open Qualifying this week for wearing metal spikes, although he insisted he was much more concerned with the state of his game than his DQ. Karlsson is certainly a worthy favourite, but his price looks skinny to me.
