Bubba has a strong chance of finishing as the Top US Scorer
Recent US Ryder Cup teams have been spearheaded by Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, but Paul Krishnamurty reckons a couple of younger major winners are ready to take a leading role this year...
Whereas focusing on the select band of stars likely to play the full quota of matches is the key to finding the top overall scorer, it is just about possible for an outsider to win their own team's market. The winning US totals in 2004 and 2006 were just 2.5 points - within range even of players who made just three appearances. Nonetheless, Chris Dimarco's success in the former was the only time a team winner hadn't played the full quota.
Identifying the leading Americans this year, however, is far from straightforward. Normally Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson would be near-bankers to play all five matches but I can see both men missing a round, due to their own indifferent form and the strength in depth available. Steve Stricker is an obvious candidate on past matchplay form but again hardly the best form option. The only other man in trading in single figures, Dustin Johnson, has an atrocious matchplay record. Indeed, with no obvious weak link to leave out, it is even possible that nobody plays the maximum.
It may pay therefore to look for value options beyond the favourites. The most interesting pair are 13.012/1 chances Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson, who played all four matches together in last year's Presidents Cup victory, gelling impressively to earn three points. Both arrive in good spirits too, having shared fifth place at Sunday's Tour Championship.
Matt Kuchar also looks set to play a central role in American plans, following an impressive debut at Celtic Manor. Kuchar's combination of accuracy and short-game prowess is perfect for matchplay, especially foursomes and fourballs. A combined bet on this trio pays just over 4.03/1.
