Jose Mourinho was definitely the 'Happy One' on Sunday
Chelsea in all honesty never looked like losing this game as they went on to lift the trophy on Sunday evening.
Goals from John Terry and Diego Costa secured Chelsea a deserved victory over Tottenham in the Capital One Cup Final at Wembley.
Jose Mourinho won the first trophy since his return and the first silverware of the season as his game-plan worked perfectly. Chelsea were well-organised and controlled the game, with Terry's goal just before half-time and Costa's deflected effort early in the second half putting the game beyond Spurs.
Chelsea showed five changes from the team which drew with Burnley last weekend, with the biggest gamble seeing Kurt Zouma lining up in midfield to replace Nemanja Matic. Spurs also showed many changes from the disappointing Europa League loss to Fiorentina, with man-of-the-moment Harry Kane leading the line.
Spurs almost took the lead with nine minutes gone. Christian Eriksen struck a powerful free-kick from 25 yards that smashed against the woodwork. It was unfortunate for the midfielder and we'll never know how differently the game might have gone if that strike has nestled in the back of the net.
Eden Hazard put a curling effort narrowly wide of the post on a rare Chelsea foray forward in the first half. Spurs saw a lot of the ball before the break but didn't really cause the Blues many problems as Chelsea dropped deep and soaked up everything, while Costa was ruffling the feathers of Spurs defenders.
Mourinho's half-time team talk will have changed drastically as Chelsea took the lead through Terry on 44 minutes. Willian swung a good free-kick in from the right that landed to Terry, and the skipper smashed the ball in from about eight yards out.
They almost doubled their lead instantly as Gary Cahill's header was well saved by Hugo Lloris, while all eyes were on a lucky Eric Dier on the stroke of half-time as he fouled Costa when the last man and already on a booking.
The second half started cagily, but Chelsea struck a hammer-blow when Costa got their second after 55 minutes. Cesc Fabregas fed the striker into the Spurs box and his angled shot took a big deflection off Kyle Walker to beat Lloris at his near post.
Chelsea were firmly in control after that second goal as Spurs went into their shell. Hazard curled another effort a mere inches wide of the post and the Belgian set up Fabregas with a lofted ball into the box, but the Spaniard could only head wide from a good position.
For the final 20 minutes Spurs tried everything they could to get back into the game, but Chelsea defended stubbornly and comfortably dealt with everything Mauricio Pochettino's side could muster. The Blues were effectively organised at the back and Spurs didn't trouble Petr Cech in the Chelsea goal as Mourinho's men showed why they are so adept at holding onto leads.
Spurs pushed and pushed in search for a goal, but it was all in vain. When Kane did get a chance after a powerful burst into the Chelsea penalty area, it was Terry who got across well and the skipper put in a fantastic block.
Chelsea legend Didier Drogba came on in injury time to a hero's welcome from the fans as the Blues comfortably held on for the win. The result never really looked in doubt once Chelsea got their second goal and it means a first trophy of what could potentially be a fantastic season for them is in their hands.
