Laurent Blanc saw his side advance on away goals
Ten-man Paris Saint-Germain dumped Chelsea out of the Champions League on away goals following a 2-2 draw after extra time.
Chelsea had a slight edge going into the last-16 second leg tie at Stamford Bridge because of their away goal in the 1-1 first leg draw in Paris three weeks ago.
They were then given an even bigger advantage just after the half-hour mark when striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic was controversially sent off.
But Chelsea just couldn't make the extra man count in a lethargic performance until Gary Cahill seemed to have won the tie with a goal inside the final 10 minutes.
However former defender David Luiz returned to haunt his old team-mates and boss Jose Mourinho, who sold him to PSG last summer, with an equaliser four minutes from time.
Chelsea again went ahead in extra time courtesy of Eden Hazard's penalty, but they couldn't hold on and Thiago Silva's late header levelled the aggregate score at 3-3 and it is Laurent Blanc's reigning French champions who go through to the last-eight on away goals.
Neither side managed to get a shot on target in a cagey opening spell before the game came to life around the half-hour mark when Ibrahimovic was harshly sent off after going into a challenge with Oscar.
Both players went in with their feet up, but Oscar came off worst and referee Bjorn Kuipers was quick to red-card the Swedish star under pressure from several Chelsea players.
Chelsea tried to push on with the extra man as Salvatore Sirigu got down well to gather at his near post from Branislav Ivanovic's cross-shot on 36 minutes as the full-back tried to add to his first leg goal for the Blues.
Diego Costa was left fuming on 43 minutes when he seemed to be tripped by Edinson Cavani inside the PSG area after he got past several players, but the referee waved play on.
Despite playing ten men Chelsea continued to look subdued after the interval as they seemed happy to play out a goalless draw which would have been enough to get them safely through.
As a result PSG were the brighter team and Cavani almost put them in front on 58 minutes when he beat the offside trap down the left and, despite going past the onrushing Thibaut Courtois, he could only hit his left-foot strike from a tight angle off the post.
Javier Pastore then got in down the left of the Chelsea area on 71 minutes but this time Courtois produced a good one-handed save to deny him.
However Chelsea did get their noses in front on 81 minutes when Cahill fired in from close range after the ball dropped to him when Costa scuffed his effort at the back post after Silva had inadvertently flicked on a Cesc Fabregas right-wing corner.
But Luiz deservedly got PSG level on 86 minutes when he got up high to power in a header from Thiago Motta's right-wing corner and took the tie into extra time.
Chelsea seemed to have clinched a vital second goal to go back in front when Hazard coolly scored from the penalty spot on 95 minutes after Silva stupidly handled in the area as he attempted to take the ball off the head of Kurt Zouma.
But with just six minutes remaining PSG scored the all-important second equaliser of the night to go through with Silva making amends for giving away the penalty.
Having forced Courtois into a wonderful one-handed save with a powerful header, Silva then out-jumped John Terry to meet Motta's subsequent left-wing corner and guided a looping header over the hoe keeper and into the net.
