Wozniacki and Kerber will tough it out..
We've reached the third round in Cincinnati, and Abelson Info are back to preview a number of big-hitting clashes ahead...
World number one Serena Williams eventually overcame Sam Stosur last time out, with both stars unable to record a single break of serve as the American rallied in each tie-break to prevail.
Her reward is a third round meeting with Flavia Pennetta, with the Italian winning in relatively comfortably fashion on Wednesday although she will be all too aware of the task that she faces next.
While Williams has faltered on a number of occasions this year, Pennetta has made no significant impact in their last two meetings, and it would be a real surprise if she is able to buck that trend in Ohio.
Meanwhile, Maria Sharapova was pushed hard in her second round clash with Madison Keys as the match went the distance before the Russian finally put her opponent away.
It doesn't get much easier for the fifth seed as Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova appears to be in good form having coasted through her opening two matches, and with a win under her belt against Sharapova on the hard court in Paris earlier this year, she will likely fancy her chances of pulling off an upset.
Nevertheless, that doesn't even begin to cover the number of exciting clashes on the schedule for Thursday, with a whole host of top seeds pitted against each other so early on.
Amongst the pack are Caroline Wozniacki and Angelique Kerber, with the German leading 5-3 in their head-to-head record after winning their last two meetings.
Over the course of the last two years, encounters between these two highly talented stars have been very competitive, and we envisage that it will continue that way on Thursday with Kerber arguably having the slight edge although both are in good form.
Elsewhere, Eugenie Bouchard's conqueror, Svetlana Kuznetsova is back in action and she will be looking to pull off another upset when she takes on Ana Ivanovic.
The Serbian star has been inconsistent in recent weeks, showing glimpses of her old self before falling to a disappointing early exit at the Rogers Cup.
However, with the US Open around the corner, she will be desperate for a confidence-boosting deep tournament run here, and given her 9-3 advantage over her rival in previous meetings, it is clear she has the ability to find the weaknesses in Kuznetsova's game.
Simona Halep is also in action on Thursday, as is Sloane Stephens who will be looking to set up a clash with Serena Williams in the next round, but perhaps the match of the day will be between Agnieszka Radwanska and Sabine Lisicki.
The fourth-seeded Pole secured her first WTA title of the season last week in Montreal after wins over the likes of Azarenka and Venus Williams, and as a result her confidence will be sky high.
She even defeated Lisicki en route to picking up that trophy, but we expect the German to give her a difficult time of it on Thursday.
