Andy Murray came from 2-0 down to beat Fernando Verdasco
Andy Murray came from two sets down to win 3-2 at a packed Centre Court this afternoon, setting up a semi-final encounter with world number 22 Jerzy Janowicz...
The world number two looked completely out of sorts in the opening exchanges against Spaniard Fernando Verdasco and those who had backed the Scot all the way down to 1.081/12 pre-match were starting to rue their decision.
Murray needed some inspiration, and perhaps it came from the steely stare of another famous Scot, Sir Alex Ferguson, who was amongst the enthralled Centre Court audience.
An early break of serve in set three appeared to gave the British number one some much needed momentum before he strolled to a 6-1 third-set victory to get himself back in the match.
It wasn't until game seven of the fourth set that Murray broke Verdasco, and the remainder of the set went with serve to enable the home favourite to level an edgy encounter at 2-2.
In a crucial, and nerve jangling fifth set, the first 10 games went with serve with the world number 54 looking just as much the likely winner as Murray. But in the 11th game of the set Murray finally broke to the delight of the home support before holding his own serve to love to close the match out 4-6, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, 7-5 in just under three and a half hours.
Murray was matched at a high of 2.166/5 to win the match in a market that saw over 32m traded; the 3-2 Set Betting was matched at 12.011/1. Murray will now meet Jerzy Janowicz in Friday's semi-final after the Pole beat fellow countryman Lukasz Kubot in straight sets.
Earlier in the day world number one Novak Djokovic beat Tomas Berdych 7-6, 6-4, 6-3 and will meet Juan Martin Del Potro, who beat David Ferrer in straight sets, in Friday's other semi-final.
