Our final SmartPlay comes from Uttoxeter

A mixture of Flat and jumps make up Tuesday's SmartPlays...

We start with two bets from Pontefract in the afternoon, the first of which runs in the 10-furlong handicap at 15:00. It contains a couple of three-year-olds tackling their elders, with Danehill Flyer being of particular interest. Generally a strong traveller, Philip Kirby's charge finally delivered on what he'd been threatening when winning over 12 furlongs here last week, having a bit in hand come the line. Under a penalty and dropped back to a trip which should suit better if anything, we're hoping Danehill Flyer can be the start of a good day for Philip Kirby.

It's three-year-olds only in the 17:30, which is run over a mile. The term 'winner without a penalty' gets bandied about rather too often these days, but it appears to apply in the case of The Scuttler. A winner on his penultimate start, the Mick Channon-trained colt was beaten a neck into second at Nottingham last time, meeting trouble two furlongs out and just failing to reel in Not Rigg. This race comes just three days on, which is a minor worry, but it's evident that The Scuttler can win from this mark, with this stiff mile clearly also suitable.

Finally we take in Uttoxeter's opener, a handicap hurdle over two miles. We're turning to Philip Kirby again, hoping that Next Edition can make it back-to-back wins over timber. Admittedly, the first leg came last autumn, but he's been active on the Flat of late, proving both his fitness and wellbeing. The main argument for Next Edition centres on his handicap mark: he's rated 94 over hurdles, yet is competitive from marks in the low-80s on the Flat. Furthermore, this sharp two miles ought to prove right up his street, with his best form on the Flat coming up to 10 furlongs. If ever Next Edition, who has looked novice-like in his jumping but was much better when scoring at Bangor, is going to prove as good over hurdles as he is on the Flat, he has no excuses for not winning today.
