Victoria Cup Result: Queally scores on Excellent Guest

Excellent Guest secured an Ascot treble for Tom Queally

George Margarson's Excellent Guest finally hit the jackpot with a valuable success in the Victoria Cup...

Cape Classic looked the likely winner when hitting the front at the furlong marker, but Queally's mount went in pursuit along with Bertiewhittle.

Although Cape Classic rallied when headed, Excellent Guest had enough up his sleeve to hold off Bertiewhittle by half a length, with Cape Classic third and Redvers fourth.

Queally said: "On the pick of his Ascot form he was entitled to be there or thereabouts. You need the luck and he got a nice run through and got the breaks. It's great for George, it shows again that if he gets the tools he's as good as anyone."

Margarson said of his winner: "He's a star. It's been two years since he won and that was off 85, but the whole family improve with age.

"He's been one of those unlucky horses, he's been second in so many good races but most of them were on soft ground. He gets a mile and I'm praying they have better ground in the Hunt Cup, but I'm not sure whether we ought to go back to six."
