Manassero is poised for his biggest win yet
Today could be a memorable one for Italian golf, with their three leading players all bang in contention at Wentworth. In his review of Sunday's 2-ball coupon, Paul Krishnamurty recommends backing all three...
Back Ross Fisher to beat Peter Uihlein 4u @ 2.111/10
Starts 11.25
The betting for this match illustrates the fickle nature of reputations. Not so long ago, only the very best European players could challenge Ross Fisher for favouritism, especially on his home course. Nowadays, he's only barely rated ahead of Peter Uihlein, a man who couldn't even win on last year's Challenge Tour. Admittedly that rather understates Uihlein's potential and his breakthrough win in the low grade Madeira Islands Open, but I see no reason to go overboard. He's only hit 43% of fairways over the last two days and could easily fall away. It is equally wrong to dismiss Fisher on the basis of a bad first season in the States. He produced his best golf in ages last time out to reach the top-ten at Quail Hollow and again showed signs of returning to form yesterday by ranking second for greens in regulation.
Back Francesco Molinari to beat Richie Ramsay 5u @ 1.855/6
Starts 12.15
After the way the wheels came off during Francesco Molinari's round yesterday, it was some achievement just to stay in contention and the Italian remains a live candidate for the title. In truth it was no great surprise to see him surrender the lead because he has a long history of struggling in front, although equally he is famous for making final day charges from off the pace. Molinari has evidently been in good touch over the past fortnight and hit an impressive 83% of greens in regulation yesterday, even whilst going backwards. For my money, that's enough to warrant selection against Ramsay, who will do well to follow on from yesterday's 66.
Back Edoardo Molinari to beat Sergio Garcia 3u @ 3.02/1
Starts 12.45
Speaking of potential final day chargers, both of this pair fit the bill from four shots back but if they get into strong contention, I would much prefer to be on the outsider. Edoardo repeatedly demonstrated nerve under pressure whenever chances presented themselves before enduring troubles over the past couple of seasons, whereas Garcia is infamously unreliable in contention. They are both clearly hitting the ball well as they rank first and second for driving accuracy this week, but Sergio has struggled with the putter. That could just make the difference as the pressure rises.
Back Matteo Manassero to beat Mark Warren 5u @ 1.84/5
Starts 13.05
Finally, lets go for an Italian hat-trick with my pre-tournament each-way selection. I'm confident Manassero will acquit himself with credit this afternoon and have learned from two years ago when he flopped after holding the final day lead here. He's top of the greens in regulation stats this week and looks as likely a winner as anyone bar Lee Westwood. In contrast, Warren has struggled off the tee every day, yet managed to engineer scores. His luck may be overdue to run out and the fact he struggled so badly in contention at the recent Spanish Open doesn't bode well.
