HP Byron Nelson Championship: A trio of bets for the opening day three-balls

Young Jordan Spieth can win his first round 3-ball

Dan Geraghty picks out a trio of bets from the Byron Nelson opening round three-balls...

Young Jordan Spieth looks short enough outright at 34.033/1 but will likely be a hard man to beat in his opening day three-ball with Jeff Overton and Ryo Ishikawa. Spieth is born and raised in Dallas and remarkably tied for 16th position here in 2010 when just 16-years-old; his form this season has been so good that he's already virtually guaranteed full PGA Tour membership for next season. Jeff Overton missed the cut last year but has two top 10s in his last three tries here and rates the danger.

Veteran Kenny Perry has been in reasonable form on the Champions Tour this year, registering three top 10s. This week he makes his first PGA Tour start of the season and his 21st start in this particular tournament. Perry looks a big price to outscore two rivals who have been in indifferent form - Y E Yang and Gary Woodland. The latter has been threatening a good week for a little while and must rate the danger but at the prices, it's Perry.

Texas native Justin Leonard has a number of good rounds to his name in this tournament and stands out as a big price to get the better of Padraig Harrington and Marc Leishman in the first round. Australian Leishman has been in wonderful form and is a worthy favourite, but his price looks very skinny.

Recommended Bets
Back Jordan Spieth @ 2.37n/a
Back Kenny Perry @ 3.7511/4
Back Justin Leonard @ 3.7511/4
