Doncaster Placepot: Monday February 4

Doncaster stages an excellent card on Monday.

The racing at Doncaster is of a quality usually unheard of on a Monday and that is where Timeform's Matt Gardner heads for the Placepot...

13:20 - Utopie Des Bordes beat Fago, who is now trained by Paul Nicholls and made an impressive British debut at Newbury last month, in a French Grade 1 Chase last November by six lengths and has subsequently been purchased by current connections for €255,000. She could easily make light work of her rivals if ready to go on debut for Nicky Henderson and we can stick her in as a first leg banker.

13:50 - Dual Cesarewitch winner Aaim To Prosper made a fairly promising start over hurdles when second at Newbury but that form hasn't worked out particularly well since and he is likely to be carrying plenty of lines, so we will take him on with Life And Soul and Zuider Zee. The former was useful on the Flat and jumped well on his hurdles bow at Catterick, finishing second to Only Orsenfoolsies, whilst Zuider Zee's career highlight on the level came at this venue when winning the November Handicap in 2011 and he has joined a yard that has tasted plenty of success with similar types.

14:25 - Vintage Star and Ruben Cotter are the two to focus on here but it is difficult to establish a preference. So the safest bet is to stick both in. The first mentioned is forced to concede weight all round having got off the mark in this sphere a month ago and could yet have more to offer, whilst Ruben Cotter is an interesting recruit to fences, being a point winner and looking to have the physical attributes to make a success of it, and there is every chance he could make a winning debut.

15:00 - Those who venture to Doncaster today are in for a real treat, with two definite Champion Hurdle contenders and one on the peripheries for that race all in action. With just four runners we need to select the winner and we ought to be fairly safe in siding with Darlan and Rock On Ruby; neither are likely to be at peak fitness as they prepare for Cheltenham but it would come as a surprise were one of them not to emerge triumphant here.

15:30 - I've got no real idea what's going to happen in this race, with 18 runners going to post and there being a varying degree of talent, potential and temperament among them, so let's fire three at it and hope that at least one hits the mark. It is difficult at this stage in the day to judge in whose favour the market will swing but Royal Deal is of interest anyway, with the six-year-old being a prolific winner in the pointing field and the suspicion being that he has more to offer in this sphere now faced with less testing conditions. Chosen Dream has achieved little in three outings to date but is a likely improver now tackling handicaps with AP McCoy taking over in the saddle whilst Push The Trigger, trained by Charlie Longsdon, showed signs of ability on his first three starts before being seemingly unsuited by the heavy ground faced on handicap debut; he could do better now on a sounder surface.

16:05 - Pindar and Quapriland are the two taken to see us across the line, if we have made it this far. The first mentioned used to be trained by Barney Curley, landing a gamble over hurdles at Hereford in September, and has made a fair start to life over fences for current connections. He would have gone very close but for a blunder two out last time but he could atone for that defeat here. Quapriland finally got her jumping together when getting off the mark over fences at Folkestone in December and, although only third over hurdles at Ffos Las later that month, it is well worth remaining positive about her over the larger obstacles and she could easily nick a place.
