This afternoon's meeting at Punchestown is the sole jumps meeting to survive the wet weather in Ireland this week, and our Irish team look to continue their fine form with three win selections.
Upazo was a costly loser at Naas last time, and whilst the winner's subsequent effort in a listed race gave that form something of a boost, it's debatable whether he possesses much scope for improvement, whereas Byerley Babe (12:50) almost certainly has more to offer over timber. Robert Tyner's runner won her only completed start in points last spring and did the job well in a bumper at Thurles on her latest start. She shaped considerably better than the result suggests on her hurdling debut there the time before and is expected to step up appreciably on that form with Tony McCoy booked.
The Pertemps qualifier on the card doesn't contain as much quality as the numbers might suggest and it's hard to get away from Colbert Station (13:50), who will take the world of beating if reproducing the form of his latest effort over fences back in this sphere off a much lower mark. A runner-up in this sphere at Navan in December, Colbert Station landed a big gamble in the valuable 3m Paddy Power Chase at Leopardstown in good style later that month and resumes in this sphere off 13 lb lower mark.
Vesper Bell (15:50) has to concede lumps of weight to his ten rivals, however, there's a good chance that he will go on to prove himself in graded company in this sphere and, with this searching test of stamina expected to be right up his street, he can come out on top. Willie Mullins' representative did well over hurdles last season (runner-up in Grade 1 at this track in April) and confirmed promise of chase debut when landing a 3m maiden in good style here in December. There's plenty more to come from him over the larger obstacles and is a worthy favourite.
