Southwell Placepot: Tuesday February 12

Today's Placepot comes from Southwell

Attention turns to Southwell for today's attempt at the Placepot...

13:40- A tricky opening to proceedings and we will include two horses as we try to negotiate safe passage. Red Shadow displayed that he is in good heart when finishing second at this venue, and he remains fairly unexposed on this surface. Mataajir is a course winner, which counts for plenty around here, and it is feasible that he will show improved form returned to the Fibresand, so he makes the perm.

14:10- A tricky leg with only the four runners and in an ideal world we would include them all to guarantee progression. However, faced with a tricky card, we cannot afford to be too lavish with lines and we will take a chance, opting to take on likely favourite Makinson Lane with Ifan and Frosty Friday. The former is fairly lightly raced and has shaped as if the step up to a mile can bring about further improvement; he may be able to strike on his first start for Tim Vaughan. Frosty Friday is a modest maiden but she does handle the Fibresand, whereas the two market leaders are unproven, and it is not out of the question she will cause an upset.

14:40- While Elusive Warrior is something of a regular around here, he doesn't boast the same strong credentials as Fluctuation and Flying Pickets, both of whom have run well at this venue lately, and we will rely on those two to see us through.

15:10- Nazreef will obviously be of interest, looking fairly treated and back on the surface he has registered four victories from as many attempts. However, he hasn't shaped that well recently, albeit on polytrack, and there are plenty we can take him on with in a competitive race. Kung Hei Fat Choy ran a rare poor race last time, but he appeals as the type to bounce back quickly and his record at Southwell gives further reason for optimism. Kickingthelilly has been in good form and, with no concerns about her effectiveness on the surface, she is also included.

15:40- Tartan Jura has the strongest claims, but he hasn't always looked like the easiest of rides and it is worth taking him on in the hope of a result. Lifetime has been out of sorts of late, but it is interesting to see that he has been well backed and a return to the level of form he produced in the summer would make him competitive. He is no banker, however, so Inside Knowledge is also added, arriving on the back of a short break following a good effort here in November.

16:10- Apache Rising got off the mark at this venue on his nursery debut, justifying market support in the process, and he still looks well treated, raised only 4 lb. He goes in as a final leg banker.
