One day later than expected, the 2013 Aussie Millions has been completed and it is Mervin Chan who has had his name written into the history books as the man who conquered the tournament.
2013 Aussie Millions Final Table
Seat 1: Jarrod Glennon - 3,600,000 chips
Seat 2: Patrik Antonius - 3,345,000
Seat 3: Dan Shak - 3,775,000
Seat 4: Jay Tan - 1,220,000
Seat 5: David Yan - 1,450,000
Seat 6: Joseph Cabret - 2,655,000
Seat 7: Mervin Chan - 2,910,000
The first player eliminated from the final table was the one who started the day as the shortest stack. Jay Tan's 1,220,000 stack represented over 40 big blinds but that did not stop her getting them all into the middle in really bad shape. Her exit occurred when Patrik Antoinus min-raised to 60,000 under the gun, Dan Shak was on his immediate left and he called. Tan was sat to the direct left of Shak and she three-bet to 175,000 only to see Antonius make it 385,000 to play. Shak mucked his hand but Tan moved all in for just over a million chips. Antonius snap-called and turned over pocket kings, which were up against the As-Qd of Tan. Neither player improved on the 7h-7d-5h-6h-7c board and Tan was busted from the tournament.
Next to go was David Yan, who also ran into pocket kings. The blinds had increased to 20,000/40,000/5,000a and Yan moved all-in for 780,000 from under the gun with what turned out to be a pair of eights. His shoved went uncalled until Chan checked his cards and called on the button. The other active players folded and the cards were revealed, Yan's eight sin terrible shape against the kings of Chan. A board reading 2s-6h-7h-3h-7c was no help to Yan and he exited the main event in sixth place.
According to the live updates on PokerNews, it took six hours for the next elimination to happen. A min-raise to 170,000 from under the gun from Joseph Cabret was three-bet to 375,000 by Jarrod Glennon, who was seated on the button. The 5h-3h-5s flop saw Cabret initially check, then call a 325,000 bet from his sole opponent. The 10c turn prompted Cabret to lead out. He set the price to pay at 825,000 and the pot was growing rapidly. Glennon called and the dealer placed the 2h onto the river. At this point Cabret moved all-in and Glennon went deep into the proverbial tank, where he stayed for almost 10-minutes while he considered his options. Glennon eventually emerged with a call, but we will never know what his holding was as it hit the much when Cabret showed Jh-8h for a flush.
After finishing fourth in the $100,000 Challenge, Dan Shak added another large score to his name when he busted out in fourth place of the Main Event. Shak opened to 250,000 from under the gun (blinds 50,000/100,000/10,000a), Cabret three-bet to 760,000 on the button and then called when Shak moved all in. Shak could only muster the As-6d and he was in poor shape against the Ac-Kd of Cabret. The 5c-Qs-Ad flop improved both players to a pair of aces, but Shak needed to spike a six or his tournament was over. The 10c was the turn card and it was followed into play by the 3s, busting Shak and reducing the final table to three players.
Three-handed play lasted through the 28th level of the tournament and at this point the floor staff decided to pause the tournament and allow the players to come back and finish the event on Sunday.
Early after Day 6 kicked off, Antonius made an ill-timed move that ultimately led to his demise. Chan opened to 325,000 at 80,000/160,000/10,000a and Antonius took it upon himself to shove for 4.96 million with just Ac-4d. Unfortunately for Antonius, Chan woke up with pocket jacks and he instantly called to put Antonius at risk. The 9s-8d-6d-Kd-6h board left Antonius with a handful of chips, which went into the middle on the very next hand and Antonius finished in third place.
It only took a few hands for the champion to be decided. Chan raised to 325,000, Cabret three-bet to 860,000 and Chan called. The pair shared a flop reading 8c-7d-3c, a flop that both players checked. The 8d seemed to ignite the fire in the players' bellies and Cabret lead out for 1.2 million, Chan made it 3 million in total and then snap-called when Cabret moved all in. Chan showed 8s-6s to the Ad-3d. The Kh on the river was the final card of the tournament as it kept the trip eights in front, busting Cabret and leaving Chan to revel in his glory.
