Roberto di Matteo sacked by Chelsea

Roberto di Matteo has been sacked by Chelsea

Chelsea are searching for a new manager after the news broke that Roberto di Matteo has been sacked by the club this morning...

Chelsea have this morning parted company with Roberto di Matteo after a run of just two wins in their last eight games, a run that has them on the brink of Champions League elimination.

Di Matteo was given the job on a permanent basis in the summer after he had guided Chelsea to FA Cup and Champions League success as caretaker boss following the dismissal of Andre Villas-Boas. The Blues started the season in impressive fashion, topping the Premier League table after two months before a poor run of form hit.

Four league games without a win and last night's 3-0 thrashing at the hands of Juventus has seen the club slip to third in the Premier League table and facing a difficult task to progress further in this season's Champions League.

And it appears that it is this recent form that has persuaded Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich to act.

A club statement read, "The team's recent performances and results have not been good enough and the owner and the board felt that a change was necessary now to keep the club moving in the right direction as we head into a vitally important part of the season.

"The club faces a difficult task ahead in qualifying for the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League as well as maintaining a strong challenge for the top of the Premier League while competing in three other cup competitions.

"Our aim is to remain as competitive as possible and challenge strongly on all fronts."

With the likes of Harry Redknapp, Rafa Benitez, and Pep Guardiola all currently out of work there'll be no shortage of interest in the Chelsea manager's job. Check back these pages later in the day for our updated odds in the next Chelsea Manager market.
