Timeform UK SmartPlays: Thursday November 29

Nicky Henderson saddles Lyvius in the 3.15

Timeform bring you three suggested bets at today's good-quality card at Newbury...

The handicap chase for novices at 12.55 may have attracted only six runners, but it still looks a competitive race of its type with five of them coming here on the back of wins. Parsnip Pete already looks a better chaser than hurdler, showing plenty of improvement on only his second start over the larger obstacles when winning a 2m event in soft ground at Haydock a month ago. That form looks even better now than it did at the time, with the runner-up Tahiti Pearl having gone in since, and he's taken to defy an 11 lb rise in the weights.

Cedre Bleu (2.40) evidently hasn't been the easiest to train, shaping as if amiss both times since making a winning chase debut here in January. However, he's been given plenty of time to recover and his two wins in Britain have come when fresh, so he can be expected to get his career back on track off a tempting mark and over a trip he should stay.

The richest race of the day is the listed handicap hurdle at 3.15 which has attracted a small but select field. Nicky Henderson has won this event twice in recent years and his four-year-old Lyvius is fancied to further enhance that record. A winner of two of his first three starts, he was then pitched into the deep end when seventh in a Grade 1 event at Aintree when last seen in April. He will find this level much more suitable, and receives weight from all bar one of his rivals.
